Costumer Critiques
Had this a few weeks now, ordered from Amazon and was able to track it all the way. Picture top quality on Freeview isnt bad but I think thats freeview to be honest, DVD excellent is fantastic and Bluray is terrific! Sound....I've yet to hear sound from any LCD tv sound excellent for me it just dosent sound appropriate so I plugged my personal speakers into the headphone socket. The description on Amazons page says 2xHDMI, this is incorrect it is actually 4xHDMI, the USBs allow you to attach an external hard drive exactly where you can view images and listen to music, you can also play AVI files, though this can be a small hit and miss. Menu and EPG are a small stark and you cant re-label the sources so HDMI 1 cant be renamed Bluray! Remote appears sturdy adequate with reasonably sized keys despite the fact that the PIP essential apparently has no function at all. You are also able to set the timer on the EPG to alter the channel.
When the sound on our BV700 went all crackly Amazon agreed to replace it with the new BV701 as the BV700 was no longer in stock, so this assessment compares the two.
Externally they appear to be identical except that there are now two USB ports and the audio phono out sockets have disappeared from the back. There has nevertheless been a major re-write of the GUI. This is now significantly easier and a lot more intuitive to use, which is a welcome adjust as the BV700 was really confusing at times. As with the BV700 the sound superior is fairly mediocre, but now attaching an external set of speakers is quite straight forward. Simply plugging the jack into the head telephone sockets turns off the Tv speakers and the volume setting automatically alterations to the headphone settings. This is a key improvement over the BV700 which handled this really badly. (You had to navigate by means of quite a few menus to get the separate volume menu). The loud relay clicking you got when you adjust video source (HDMI to SCART and so on.) has also disappeared. So some massive improvements so far....
The image top quality is yet extra questionable. I was really pleased with the picture of the BV700 and expected this to be identical. However Toshiba have played about with the settings and I wouldn't say it was for the better. The picture is very bright, but possibly too vivid as the image seems a tiny white washed at occasions. Also the contrast is set near maximum so there is tiny scope to boost it if you want. By reducing the brightness considerably I can nonetheless get a image to my liking, just about.
The Freeview performance I can not comment on as we are still in a not-spot. We use the excellent Humax freesat HD recorder which offers fantastic efficiency in HD at 1080i. Similarly using a Blu-ray player supplies an outstanding video source.
So general I think the Television is worth four, let down primarily by the sound. But don't assume that the BV701 is the identical as the BV700, Toshiba have tinkered inside fairly a bit.
